Does saturated fat raise your blood cholesterol?

QUESTION: Is it true that saturated fat raise your blood cholesterol? What about the cholesterol content of foods?

ANSWER: Hi,

Yes, it is true that saturated fat foods can raise your blood cholesterol. Indeed, the type of fat you eat is very important for your lipid profile changes.

The more saturated ("bad") fatty foods you include in your diet, the more negatively they will influence your blood cholesterol, leading to high cholesterol problems.

With regards to cholesterol content in food, it can have a less influence, therefore less count compared to saturated or trans-fats, which are regarded as the most dangerous.

Why saturated fats are called "bad"?

As our body is able to produce saturated fats according to its needs by itself, therefore, the extra we add through our diet will be accumulated in the form of LDL and HDL.

For your info, the metabolisms of all the lipids in our body are related; therefore, the more saturated fat you add to your diet, the more LDL and HDL will be produced.

The effect of increasing HDL is the most desired, however, when it comes along with high LDL; then, it turns to a different problem.

What are some foods rich in saturated fats?

They include red meat, whole-milk dairy products, some seafood, skinny poultry, some vegetable oils (coconut, palm and palm kernel oil), etc.

You can adjust your diet with less of these foods high in saturated fats, and have more unsaturated ones.

All the best!

QUESTION: I am overweight trying to control wt. can i have de-starched rice in my meals?

ANSWER: Hi Renu,

For your information, there are a variety of rice in the market. With regards to carb-content in rice, some varieties of white rice have high amounts of carbs compared to brown rice.

As you may see, consuming brown rice (high in fiber and low in carb), is a wise think if you want to lose weight and to be healthy.

If you think that the rice you use is de-starched (i.e low in simple carbohydrates), then, go ahead and use it. But, be careful: do not have more than 1 meal with rice.

I know that in India, rice and bread (especially varieties of roti) are famous and most of the people like them. But, they are high in carb and fat (when extra oil is added to cook them); so, you must use them wisely.

  • Another thing I want to remind you is that limiting rice or food is not the only way of losing weight.

Exercising, avoiding alcohol and Diabetic Ketoacidosis smoking, etc are some other important things to keep in mind if you want to lose weight or be healthy without worrying about any disease.

    All the best!
