What are elevated postprandial blood glucose levels and elevated triglycerides an indicator of?

QUESTION: What are elevated postprandial blood glucose levels and elevated triglycerides an indicator of? My readings are blood glucose = 237 mg/dl ; triglycerides = 178 mg/dl. Any idea?

ANSWER: Hi,

  • Elevated postprandial (after eating) blood glucose levels (>200mg/dl) indicate that you may have diabetes mellitus.

Blood glucose levels at all times after ingestion of food or glucose should not exceed 200mg/dl and should decrease as the time passes due to the action of the insulin.

Although the postprandial glucose levels give a good indication for the presence of diabetes, it is not the standard diagnostic test of diabetes. Laboratory tested fasting sample for blood sugar is the most trusted for the correct diagnosis.

  • Elevated triglycerides level (>150mg/dl) are indicator of increased risk of getting heart attack and stroke. Triglyceride levels are elevated when the fat content of the body increases than normal.

Take good care of your health.
