Understanding ldl test

How to perform ldl test? Why should I undergo this test? How to read the results?

Get all the answers in this section.

  • What is ldl test and why should I undergo it?

This test reveals the amount of ldl in your bloodstream. As you may probably know, ldl is one type of lipoproteins which do transport cholesterol in your bloodstream.

It’s very important to know how much ldl is in your blood, because you may know what risk of heart disease do you have. The lower your ldl cholesterol level is, the more safer you are. This is according to National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute.

  • Who may be ordered to run this test?

People with family history of heart disease or diabetes or high blood pressure or being overweight (considered as high risk ones) are recommended to perform this test.

If you're an adult, it is recommended to run this test every five years to get protected. Or, if you have high ldl levels, you should perform this test to see how well you are doing in lowering your high ldl levels

If of a child, it's recommended to perform this test only if they have the above risk factors. Here the test is run to children between two and twelve years old. If younger, it's not necessary to run it.

  • How to perform ldl test?

It's very simple. A lipid profile is required together with ldl test. You should not eat for at least eight hours (till twelve hours) and your doctor will tell you what medicine to quit before doing the test.

You need to go to the hospital and the nurses there will extract the blood from your vessels for the test.

  • How can I read the results?

How to read the normal results?

The National Cholesterol Education Programs evaluate your normal ldl levels as lower than 100 mg/dl (2.59 mmol/dl). This is good, and if you have this result that means you are safe.

Even if your results are between 100 and 129 mg/dl, which is the near best range, you may consider safe. However here your safety is reduced. That means that your should start your program to lower ldl cholesterol.

If you get results higher than 130 mg/dl, you must consider at high risk for heart disease.
