QUESTION: Can donating blood and diet lower cholesterol of donor?

ANSWER: Hi there,

This is quite an important question, because some people are still thinking that donating blood is something, which lowers their cholesterol level.

However, this is not true, because when you are donating blood, you are donating the cholesterol which is dissolved in the blood.

This is explained with the laws of the physics. In certain amount of blood, it is dissolved certain amount of cholesterol and the concentration is constant.

When someone is taking the solvent (the blood in this case), he is also taking the dissolved substance (the cholesterol) too.

Because of this, it is not possible to lower the cholesterol concentration "naturally" by donating blood.

  • Regarding the diet, you have to know that this is very important manner for blood cholesterol reduction.

As you probably know, there are two types of cholesterol in the human body. The first type is acquired with the food and the second type is the one, which is produced in the organism.

These types are defining the final cholesterol concentration in the organism. Although you are not able to limit the production of cholesterol in your organism, however, you are able to reduce the consumption of cholesterol - by following your diet.

The synthesis of cholesterol in the organism is permanent and constant, which means that the human body is producing almost every day the same amount of cholesterol.

  • When you are eating meals, which contain small amount of cholesterol, fats and triglycerides, you are reducing the intake of fats. Consequently, you are reducing the cholesterol concentration, which is represented by lower blood cholesterol level.

  • You have to know that taking drugs is an option for blood cholesterol reduction, but the doctors are prescribing them, when high blood cholesterol concentration is observed and diet strategy is not helping.

Because of this, my advice for you is to start following a diet and to focus on the exercises. Important fact is that exercises are causing reduction of the blood cholesterol concentration and reducing the risk of cardio-vascular diseases at the same time.

  • You should start running at least 2-3 times a week for about 30 minutes. This activity with diet in combination will improve not only your lipid status, but the whole metabolism of yours.

    Hope it helped!
